Do you want to know how to dominate high school? Like, not just do okay, but really excel and lay the groundwork for an amazing higher education experience and (hopefully) future job opportunities?
Then you need to know and practice these 10 secrets to studying more effectively in high school. Check it out!
1. Get Some Exercise
Our first tip might seem odd because it has nothing to do with school. But trust us when we say that sitting around all the time is counterproductive to studying. A healthy brain needs a healthy body and a healthy body needs exercise!
2. Get Some Sun
You need to concentrate when you’re studying and vitamin D is vital to keeping up your mental health. Sunshine prompts the body to create this essential nutrient so spend a little time outside each day.
3. Eat Healthily
Along with plenty of sunshine, eating the right foods can set you up for success in school. Your brain will work better when you eat a protein-rich diet full of fruits and veggies as opposed to a steady diet of doughnuts and processed snacks.
4. Make Interesting Notes
Notes with colour-coding, highlights, arrows, doodles, and other interesting tricks are easier to read. Plus, even though they take longer to create, you’ll retain the information better, making them an effective study tool themselves.
5. Take Breaks
You might think that powering through a study session is the best way to study. Actually, your brain gets fatigued and could use periodic breaks.
Try the Pomodoro method of studying for 25 minutes then taking a 5-minute break before diving back in for another 25 minutes.
6. Minimize Interruptions
You’ll find that studying maths and English is almost impossible if you’re constantly being interrupted. Create a system to let your family know when it’s study time and don’t forget to mute your phone.
7. Keep Your Mind Active
You can get your brain in gear for a study session by reading some thought-provoking content that interests you. Just don’t get too immersed and forget to start studying!
8. Put Your Deadlines on the Wall
Writing your deadlines in a book isn’t always the most efficient way to handle them. It’s better to put them on a big wall calendar where you can easily see them.
This makes it less likely that you’ll miss one. Plus, you know exactly what you need to be doing each day.
9. Edit Later
When you edit a paper immediately after reading it, your brain will gloss over the mistakes. Try to finish your assignments at least 24 hours before they’re due so you can come back and proofread with a fresh perspective.
10. Spend Time With Your Family
Social connections are important for your mental health as well. Dedicate enough time to studying but make room for hanging out with your family and friends as well.
Remember, high school isn’t just about studying. It can be fun too!
