How to Efficiently Use Water at Home

Rating & reviews (0 reviews)
Every year at least 4 trillion cubic meters of water are used globally. Can you even imagine that amount of water? In every household, water is used for drinking, cooking, showering, clothes washing, garden watering, and in various products as well. However, much of that water is wasted as well.

Water Leaking

Because of this our water supply is dwindling and it’s believed that by 2050, 50% of the world's population will face a safe water shortage.

Apart from that, our water bills are higher and higher each month. So, what can we do to stop using this nature’s resource so mindlessly?

We can learn how to use water more efficiently in our homes. Turn your home into a smart and eco-friendly home by simply learning how to properly manage water usage. Let’s see how we can do this.

1.      Deal with leak problems

If you’ve noticed that your water bill is becoming higher and higher every month, it could be that you have a leak somewhere.

Every home, especially older ones, should be regularly checked for leaks in their plumbing. Leaks can happen to anyone and they are something that can drive your water bill up and in the worst-case scenario, they can cause bigger disasters such as burst pipes.

To prevent any potential leaks in your plumbing, you should check your piping before every winter. If this sounds too complicated, you can always hire a professional plumber to inspect the piping for you.

2.      Turn off the water tap

Do you turn off the tap when you’re washing your hands or brushing your teeth? Probably not. This is something that most of us do unconsciously and it can waste a lot of water.

To avoid wasting water unnecessarily, when you’re soaping your hands or brushing your teeth, turn of the tap. Once you’re done, you can turn it back on and rinse the hands and your mouth. Similarly, when washing your hair, turn off the shower water while you’re shampooing it.

Simply doing these small things can save up to 200 gallons of water per month!

3.      Use shower instead of a bath

It’s ok to use a bath every now and then, but not every day. Just by filling a bathtub, you’re using at least 30 gallons of water, which is two or three times more water than what you would use in the shower.

Of course, we have to factor in the amount of time spent in the said shower. If your goal is to avoid wasting too much water, your shower time should be around 5 minutes – a power shower basically.

Another solution would be to install water-saving showerheads and taps that regulate the water flow.

4.      Watering your garden smartly

Having a garden is a blessing and a curse at the same time. When you own a garden you have the responsibility to take good care of it and to properly maintain it. How can you do this without wasting too much water?

If you’re afraid of wasting too much water on your garden, you can easily install a quality reeling hose. The reeling hose can be of great help as it prevents unnecessary leaky fittings and drippings, no struggling with the hose, and no more hose storage problems.

When using a hose, you can directly water the plant with the amount of water you want and without wasting it.

5.      Reuse cooking water

What do you usually do with the leftover cooking water? You throw it away, of course. The thing is, you don’t have to throw the water away since there is nothing wrong with that water – it’s just been boiled.

If you’re often left with water from boiling vegetables, eggs, or cooking pasta, you can use it to water the garden. Let the water cool down and then, either water your house plants or your garden. This way you won’t waste water unnecessarily!

6.      Track water usage

Don’t forget to track your water usage. You will never know how much water your household really uses without a water meter. Once you figure out the daily consumption of water in your household, you can easily figure out ways to save water.

Smart water meters not only measure the water flow automatically several times a day but also report back to you about the usage and alert you about potential leak problems. With this kind of technology, you’ll be able to take action and save both water and money at the same time.

Wasting water is easy and often we waste it unconsciously. However, it takes very little effort to use water efficiently and smartly.
