Rating & reviews (0 reviews)

With an array of spectacular shows playing throughout the year, London’s West End is a wonderful place to visit - and if you enjoy the theatre as an adult, imagine just how magical it is for younger generations to see stories brought to life in front of their very eyes.

If you’re a theatre buff with big plans to take your little one(s) to a West End show in the near future, here are the best shows for kids to enjoy.

1. Matilda

Telling the tale of Roald Dahl’s magically genius schoolgirl who loves nothing more than reading a good book, Matilda has been resident at the Cambridge Theatre near Covent Garden for almost a decade. This funny yet heartfelt show follows the literary heroine as she rebels against her dimwitted parents, growing close to her beloved schoolteacher and mother figure, Miss Honey. With the comedic Miss Trunchbull, a cast of impressive young performers and some seriously catchy tunes, this one is fun for all the family.

2. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child

Despite being released more than 20 years ago, Harry Potter is continuing to capture the attention of children around the globe, and the sequel to JK Rowling’s books is a stage exclusive, with impressive special effects, strong characterisation and a spine-tingling soundtrack from Imogen Heap. Following Harry and Draco’s children as it becomes their turn to head off to Hogwarts, the twists and turns will have you and your kids on the edge of your seats for all 5+ hours! With dark themes, it’s worth noting that this show is more appropriate for older kids.

3. Wicked

If you think you need to have seen the Wizard of Oz in order to appreciate Wicked, you’d be wrong. Following the Wicked Witch of the West, Elphaba, as she forms an unlikely friendship with the popular girl in the school, Glinda, this show brings laughs and teaches lessons along the way. A favourite West End musical (despite not actually being located in the West End), the show has scooped countless awards, so you’d be mad to pass up on the chance to see it for yourself.

4. Lion King

One of the most iconic Disney films in existence is also one of the most spectacular West End shows, loved by children of all ages. The intricate costumes and artistic performances are second-to-none. Featuring Elton John’s music from the 1994 film, you and the kids are sure to be singing along in your heads as you watch Simba’s story unravel on stage. Lion King has been running at the Lyceum for more than 20 years - a mark of just how great it is.

Travelling to London by train? While there isn’t a hotel in Paddington station, there are plenty near by and it’s a great place to consider staying on your city break - not least because you can make the most of the wonderful restaurants near Park Grand Kensington.
